The San Antonio Spurs have signed 33-year old power forward David Lee to a 2-year, $3.2 million dollar deal.  The second year of the contract is a player option.  Lee played in 55 games (5 starts) for the Celtics and Mavericks in which he averaged 16.4 minutes, 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.  He also played in 2 games (0 starts) in the playoffs for the Mavericks last year in which he averaged 16.5 minutes, 6.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game.  Lee has now played in 750 games (495 starts) in his first 11 years in the NBA and he is averaging 30.4 minutes, 14.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.  He has also played in 28 games (8 starts) in the playoffs so far in his career in which he is averaging 15.1 minutes, 6.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.  This is a good move for the Spurs, as Lee will help them replace David West and Boris Diaw.

The Detroit Pistons sign Boban Marjanovic to an offer sheet

Blogged under Big Spurs News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Thursday 7 July 2016 at 12:13 pm

The Detroit Pistons have signed 27-year old center Boban Marjanovic to a 3-year, $21 million dollar offer sheet.  The Spurs will have three days to match it or let Marjanovic leave for Detroit.  Marjanovic played in 54 games (4 starts) as a rookie for the Spurs last year and he averaged 9.4 minutes, 5.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.  He also played in 7 games (0 starts) in the playoffs for the Spurs last year and he averaged 6.0 minutes, 3.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.  I don’t think the Spurs will match the offer sheet the Pistons gave Marjanovic.  I think they signed Dewayne Dedmon to replace him.

UPDATE:  (7/10/2016) – The Spurs have declined to match the Pistons’ offer sheet for Boban Marjanovic.

The San Antonio Spurs deal Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz

The San Antonio Spurs have sent 34-year old forward Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz for the draft rights to 2015 second round pick, 23-year old shooting guard Olivier Hanlan.  Diaw played in 76 games (4 starts) for the Spurs last year and he averaged 18.2 minutes, 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.  He also played in 9 games (0 starts) in the playoffs for the Spurs last year and he averaged 17.7 minutes, 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.  Diaw played in 331 games (70 starts) in his five years with the Spurs and he averaged 22.5 minutes, 7.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.  He also played in 69 games (18 starts) in the playoffs for the Spurs and he averaged 22.9 minutes, 7.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.  Diaw helped the Spurs win the NBA Title in 2013-14.  This deal was made to move Diaw’s $7 million dollar salary so that the Spurs can sign Pau Gasol.

UPDATE:  The Spurs have also sent cash considerations and a 2nd round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft to the Utah Jazz as part of this deal.

The San Antonio Spurs sign Pau Gasol

Blogged under Big Spurs News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Tuesday 5 July 2016 at 10:18 am

The San Antonio Spurs have signed 35-year old center Pau Gasol to a 2-year, $30 million dollar deal.  The second year of the deal is a player option.  Gasol played in 72 games (all starts) for the Chicago Bulls last year and he averaged 31.8 minutes, 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 blocked shots per game.  Gasol has now played in 1,055 games (1,042 starts) in his first 15 years in the NBA and he is averaging 35.3 minutes, 18.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 blocked shots per game.  He also played in 115 games (all starts) in the playoffs so far in his NBA career and he is averaging 38.0 minutes, 16.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 blocked shots per game.

Gasol is a six time NBA All-Star and he helped the Los Angeles Lakers win back to back NBA Titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10.  Gasol is moving up the charts in the NBA record books.  He is #49 in points scored (19,209) in NBA history.  He is also #88 in games played (1,055), #32 in offensive rebounds (2,827), #22 in defensive rebounds (7,221), #38 in total rebounds (10,048) and #23 in blocked shots (1,777) in NBA history!

I love this pickup for the Spurs, as they will have one of the best starting front lines in all of basketball with Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard.  This signing likely means that Tim Duncan is leaning towards retirement.
